Wilderness Medicine Fellowship

everestThe Wilderness Medicine Fellowship is designed to provide the opportunity, experience and educational support to enable graduates to have the skills and knowledge to excel in the field of wilderness medicine (WM). 

During this one year program the Fellow will serve as junior faculty in emergency medicine, supervising EM residents and medical students.  As such, candidates must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine.

 

 

The Fellowship is comprised of:

  • Core didactics and regularly scheduled meetings with the Fellowship Director
  • Membership in the Wilderness Medical Society with concurrent advancement toward becoming a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine.
  • Active membership and participation in ACEP's Wilderness Medicine Section
  • Research or other scholarly activity
  • Clinical opportunities in wilderness medicine (tactical medicine, search and rescue, EMS management, ski patrol, park medic program, international medicine, hyperbarics & dive medicine, tropical medicine, etc.) based on the specific area of interest of the fellow with agreement and supervision of the fellowship director
  • Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS) certification with the opportunity to become an instructor
  • Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS) certification with the opportunity to become an instructor

Teaching opportunities include:

  • American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid
  • The WMS Annual Student Elective
  • MedWAR (Medical Wilderness Adventure Race)
  • Appalachian Center for Wilderness Medicine (ACWM) Annual Student Conference
  • Emergency Medicine Residents' Grand Rounds & Wilderness Day
  • Introduction to Wilderness & International Medicine (EMED 5086)
  • WM Student Interest Group activities

While participation in scholarly activity is expected, there is flexibility to allow for travel and fieldwork, as well as pursuit of specific interests within the field of WM.  Candidates must be motivated and driven to succeed.
