Residency Military Affiliation

jssem2023

Beginning in 2008, Medical College of Georgia at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ’s Department of Emergency Medicine began an affiliation with the United States Army to serve as a new training site for aspiring emergency medicine physicians.

Since then, this affiliation has blossomed and our residency now takes up to eight military residents per year who will be serving their country after graduation.

Our affiliation with the United States Army has enabled us to expand our clinical opportunities beyond 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ. We now have scheduled rotations and available electives at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, a major military hospital located at Fort Gordon, GA, as well as opportunities for Army training courses including the US Army Flight Surgeon Primary Course, the Advanced Wilderness Medicine Course at Fort Lewis, and multiple other opportunities throughout the Army. Our PGY-1 residents attend the C4 course in San Antonio along with their peers across Army Medicine. The unique training of 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ, combined with Army-centric opportunities, makes our military residents well-trained for Army medicine.

Legacy of Excellence

Previous residents have gone on to serve in every area of Army Emergency Medicine including operational assignments as Special Forces Battalion Surgeons, Army Ranger Battalion Surgeons, Army Flight Surgeons, and Brigade Surgeons. Our graduates have also been assigned to clinical jobs and teaching faculty upon graduation including assignments to Darnall Army Medical Center, D.D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, and General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital.

In addition to producing exceptional graduates, Medical College of Georgia at 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ University's Emergency Medicine has on its faculty many current and recently retired Army Emergency Medicine physicians who help to educate our residents for successful careers as Army EM physicians.

Medical Students with Army Affiliation

Our program welcomes rotations from USUHS and HPSP medical students as well as GMO candidates with the goal of developing well-rounded physicians for years to come as well as enhancing the residents’ opportunities to teach and lead patient care. This rotation is eligible as an ADT rotation.

Below are some important aspects of the student rotation:

  • 4 weeks of integrated patient care activities; students work side by side with the residents and attendings in a busy ED
  • Dedicated procedure lab, Emergency ultrasound and SIM education to allow for hands-on training
  • Social gatherings with the residents, staff, and students to allow for interaction outside of the work environment

Interview Scheduling

We are excited you might be considering us for your residency. Interviews for military personnel are scheduled directly with the department.
