Manuela Bartoli, PhD

Professor, Ophthalmology
Director of Research

706-721-9797

Dr. Manuela Bartoli trained in the area of experimental medicine and pathology. Her postdoctoral fellowship in biochemistry and vascular biology formed a solid foundation for research of diabetic retinopathy and other diseases related to retinal vasculature. Dr. Bartoli is particularly interested in angiogenesis. She has served on study sections reviewing NEI-funded grants and reviews for over 10 journals, including the major vision-research journals. Her funding from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation analyzed statins treatment as mediators of inflammation. She collaborates also with Dr. Ruth Caldwell and is a co-investigator on an NEI funded project studying the blood retinal barrier. She has recently been investigating thioredoxin and its role in retinal disease. Dr. Bartoli collaborates with other members of the VDI including Drs. Martin, Caldwell, El-Remessy and Liou. Dr. Bartoli is mentoring graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in her lab. She has served as the VDI Seminar coordinator and currently is the Director of the Vision Science Course (ANAT 8030).

Research Arena

Summary: Dr. Bartoli's research interest focuses on the specific contribution of oxidative and inflammatory processes in the pathogenesis of ischemic retinopathies including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and retinopathy of prematurity.

Key research areas:

--Role of endogenous antioxidants in diabetic retinopathy.

--Amyloid beta-mediated pro-inflammatory effects in age-related macular degeneration

--MicroRNAs mediated modulation of retinal neovascularization
