Medical Students, Residents, and Faculty  engage in discussion centered around a recent or current patient admitted to the hospital. Each inpatient team has the opportunity to present a case 1 to 2 times per rotation. Faculty members and the Chief Residents also lead sessions about interesting cases and wellbeing/meditation.

Didactic sessions every Tuesdays are scheduled for residents as protected educational time, centered around Board Review themes.  

Other special noon conferences with lunch provided are also integrated into the weekly schedule

Pediatric Grand Rounds is centered on providing health care professionals a means to stay current on evolving areas of interest centered on the care of children. 

Speakers include faculty members, local members of the community, and nationally regarded experts in the field.

The Pediatric Evidence Based Medicine Curriculum is to ensure that all graduating residents can demonstrate the ability to locate, appraise, and assimilate evidence from scientific studies related to their patients鈥� health problems, use information technology to optimize learning, take primary responsibility for life-ling learning to improve knowledge skills and practice performance.

These goals are accomplished through  participation in a series of interactive group and individualized clinical and didactic assignments. 

 

Each Pediatric Resident participates in the development of a scholarly activity, which includes one of the following:

1) A written review of a topic, to include an investigational component e.g. chart review; or

2) Case report and review of the literature that is submitted for publication or presentation; or

3) Original investigation 

4) Educational Podcast and Curriculum Development

Residents identify a faculty advisor to assist with planning and have specific requirements each year to complete towards the completion of their scholarly activity. Each scholarly activity is eligible for the annual  鈥�William P Kanto Pediatric Resident Research Award.鈥� Up to four PGY-3 resident projects are chosen as finalists to be presented orally at the Resident and Fellow Research Symposium. All other residents create a poster presentation of their project.

Residents participate in a quality improvement project during their PGY-2  year in the setting of continuity clinic. Projects are presented during noon conference at the end of their second year of Residency.

Each resident is required to demonstrate competence in Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, which involves the investigation and evaluation of care for patients, the appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence, and continuous improvements in patient care. Residents are required to create an individualized learning plan (ILP) that is updated annually with review and discussion with Faculty Advisors. The ILP helps to ensure that the residency program is meeting each individual's training needs and to identify individualized areas of improvement to accomplish career goals. 

Residents must demonstrate competency of required procedures including: 

• Bag-mask ventilation
• Bladder catheterization
• Giving immunizations
• Incision and drainage of abscess
• Lumbar puncture
• Neonatal endotracheal intubation
• Peripheral intravenous catheter placement
• reduction of simple dislocation
• simple laceration repair
• simple removal of foreign body
• temporary splinting of fracture
• umbilical catheter placement
• venipuncture
