Thermal Sensitivity Test

Rodent raises hind paw in the thermal sensitivity test

Description

In the thermal sensitivity test the rodent is placed on an apparatus that gradually increases in temperature. The temperature of the heating surface is elevated by 30C per minute from a beginning temperature of 420C to a maximum temperature of 490C. The time that passes before the animal lifts a hind paw from the surface of the plate is recorded.

Purpose

The speed with which the rodent lifts its hind paw is a measure of supraspinal nociception and is useful in screening potential analgesic drugs.
