Health services managers, also called health care executives or health care administrators, plan and direct medical and health services for a variety of different areas. The health services program from the College of Allied Health Sciences’ Department of Allied Health Professions helps prepare students for a variety of pathways.

Why this program?

Bachelor of Science in Health Services

The Bachelor of Science in Health Services is an open-degree undergraduate program. “Open-degree” means that students will be able to declare the degree upon matriculation to the university. The program will provide knowledge and skills in healthcare delivery, leadership, cultural competency, global health, bioethics, statistics, and research/innovation. The purpose of the BSHS is to prepare individuals ready to assume medical and healthcare jobs in health services administration. The program curriculum includes courses taught on both the Summerville and Health Sciences campuses.

The US Department of Labor projects that job opportunities for medical and health services management will increase by 29% nationwide and 23% in Georgia. Predicted growth for the industries employing the most health services managers in Georgia are as follows: Social assistance (51%), Healthcare (25%), Education services; state, local, and private (19%), and Finance and insurance (7%).

Careers

Health services managers, also called healthcare executives or healthcare administrators, plan, direct, and coordinate medical and health services. They might manage an entire facility, a specific clinical area or department, or a medical practice for a group of physicians. Medical and health services managers must direct changes to conform to healthcare laws, regulations, and technology. Medical and health services managers held about 333,000 jobs in 2014. Most medical and health services managers work in offices in healthcare facilities, including hospitals and nursing homes, and group medical practices.

Income Potential

The Department of Labor states the median pay for health managers and health services administrators is $96,540 or $46.41/hour.
