Abigalis Mejia-Saladinm
Abigalis Mejia-Saladin
College of Allied Health Sciences
Master of Science in Medical Illustration
"We all have our strengths, skills, and styles that are different. I know without them I wouldn't be where I am today."

Augusta University is one of only four schools in the country to offer a Medical Illustration Graduate Program. At AU,  students develop their creative and technical expertise to lead transformative, interdisciplinary innovation. Among them is Abigalis Mejia-Saladin, a Master of Science in Medical Illustration student whose unique blend of artistic talent and scientific curiosity is shaping the future of medical education. From her early interest in fine art to her award-winning anatomical models, Abigalis is leaving a lasting impact

Discovering Medical Illustration

Abigalis was first introduced to the field in high school. 鈥淚 was introduced to medical illustration by my high school history teacher Glenn Vaught,鈥 she shared. 鈥淗e was friends with Medical Illustrator Andrew Swift, who I shadowed for my capstone project.鈥 That experience inspired her to set a goal to pursue medical illustration professionally. 鈥淕oing into college I had my goal to get great at the traditional foundations of art, build a portfolio, and try my hardest to get in the program,鈥 Abigalis said. With a bachelor of fine arts in studio fine art and a post-baccalaureate in required science courses, she brought a strong creative background to a cohort largely composed of science majors.

Fundamental Skills and Innovative Technologies

For those considering the same path, Abigalis鈥 advice is to keep practicing both traditional and digital skills. 鈥淎lways keep up practice in drawing skills and keep up to date with up-and-coming technologies,鈥 she said. 鈥淏oth are equally important and inform one another.鈥 In her program, 蝉丑别鈥檚 had opportunities to do just that鈥especially in the elective coursework that allows students to specialize. 鈥淚n my last year of study, I have chosen to specialize in medical sculpture,鈥 Abigalis explained. Her 3D colon model with diverticulitis won the Sternstrom Award of Excellence, and her master鈥檚 project鈥攄eveloping a second-degree perineal tear suture simulation鈥攔ecently earned second place at the 2025 Innovate Pitch competition. 鈥淚t鈥檚 designed to replace AU鈥檚 current sponge model that teaches medical students in OB/GYN courses how to suture the common tear that occurs during childbirth.鈥

Growing Through Challenge

The intensity of the program has helped Abigalis grow both technically and professionally. 鈥淭he workload is high, but it reflects the real world fast-paced market,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 feel prepared for the quick turnaround time that most medical illustration professionals face.鈥 Entering with only a small grasp on digital media, 蝉丑别鈥檚 now confident in her digital skill set. 鈥淲ithin the program, students are immersed in a variety of digital programs with each project we do reinforcing our learning. I can say I have improved immensely in digital media skills and techniques.鈥

Support, Inspiration, and Balance

Throughout her journey, Abigalis has been inspired by faculty like Dr. Amanda Behr. 鈥淪he is not only the Department Chair for 51吃瓜黑料曝料鈥檚 Medical Illustration Program, but she is a talented certified clinical anaplastologist,鈥 Abigalis said. 鈥淓very day she works hard either teaching the future of medical illustration or working with patients to create prostheses that not only build their confidence but help restore or replace body parts that have been lost due to conditions, trauma, or disease.鈥 Outside of class, Abigalis maintains balance through indoor rock climbing and crocheting. 鈥淲eather permitting, I like to spend time with the gators at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park,鈥 she added.

A Tight-Knit Community and Bright Future

One of the most rewarding parts of the program for Abigalis has been the sense of community. 鈥淥ur class is very small, therefore, we are very close,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ith only 9 students accepted each year, from all across the country, we come from all walks of life.鈥 Although they work together from 9 to 5 on weekdays, the group still chooses to hang out in the evenings and on weekends. 鈥淲e genuinely enjoy each other鈥檚 company, and we have weekly movie nights, go to local festivals, and have dinner together.鈥 Abigalis credits this collaboration for helping her grow: 鈥淲e all have our strengths, skills, and styles that are different. We help each other out when we can. I know without them I 飞辞耻濒诲苍鈥檛 be where I am today.鈥 From traditional drawing to cutting-edge simulation, Abigalis鈥 work represents the very best of what it means to be a graduate student at 51吃瓜黑料曝料鈥攊nnovation, collaboration, and a deep commitment to using knowledge to improve lives.
