Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency

A joint venture between 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ and Wellstar MCG Health

The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Residency Program is for physical therapists who have successfully completed their learning requirements. The program provides educational and clinical experiences in an academic healthcare setting, including a regional Level 1 Trauma Center, a children's hospital, and over 80 outpatient facilities. 

As a resident, you will: 

  • Provide excellent physical therapy care utilizing a patient and family-centered approach. 
  • Understand, appraise, and apply principles of research and evidence-based practice. 
  • Assist with teaching and supervision of entry-level student physical therapists. 
  • Demonstrate expertise in physical therapy and high-level clinical reasoning skills. 
  • Utilize effective professional communication skills when interacting with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare team members.
  • Upon the successful completion of all program requirements, you will be qualified and eligible to sit for the board certification exam.

What to Expect

Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency Program

  • 12 months (September 1 - August 31 the following year)
  • 75% clinical workload
  • Salary with full benefits 
  • No tuition fees

Educational Experiences

  • One-year adjunct faculty appointment in entry-level DPT program
  • Residency didactic material taught in person by university faculty and experts in the field
  • Physician and specialist observation, including orthopaedic surgeries
  • Attendance at MCG Department of Orthopaedic grand rounds and physician case reports
  • Participation in journal clubs

Clinical Practice

  • Primary clinical practice is housed locally at , our multidisciplinary orthopaedic and sports medicine facility
  • Additional clinical practice hours at , a community-based pro-bono clinic

The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ Orthopaedic Residency Program is accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE). This post-professional educational program is based upon the criteria set forth by the ABPTRFE's Description of Residency Practice (DRP): Orthopaedic Physical Therapy.

Other educational programs offered by the Department of Physical Therapy

CAPTE only evaluates entry-level DPT programs and does not accredit transitional DPT, post-professional degree programs, residency, or fellowship programs. The residency programs offered by 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ are evaluated for accreditation by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education.
