Student Activities

Association for Computing Machinery

 ACM is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society that delivers resources that advance computing as a science and as a profession. ACM provides the computing field's premier Digital Library and serves its members and the computing profession with leading-edge publications, conferences, and career resources. The 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ student chapter of ACM has subgroups focused on programming, cyber defense and web development that participate in activities and competitions in their respective fields.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon

Known as the first and only existing international honor society for computing and information disciplines, Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) was founded at Texas A&M University in 1967. 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ chartered its chapter of UPE in October 2019 with seven charter members. Membership in UPE is limited to juniors and seniors who are in the top 35% of students in their major with at least a 3.3 GPA. For more information or questions about UPE, contact faculty advisors Dr. Shungeng Zhang or Dr. Edward Tremel.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon

Girls Who Code

Girls Who Code is a nonprofit organization that aims to bridge the gender gap in the field of computer science. Through various educational programs, workshops, and initiatives, Girls Who Code empowers and equips young girls with the skills and confidence to explore and excel in the world of coding and technology. The organization's mission is to foster a more diverse and inclusive tech industry by providing girls with the opportunity to learn coding, problem-solving, and teamwork, ultimately preparing them for future careers in STEM-related fields.

Game Design Club

This club welcomes all majors and levels to the club from the designers to the beta testers. The club is open to all that are seeking an academic and social club focused on the art and science of game development. This club's focus is on creating new games including new concepts for games and expanding knowledge about game design. Students in this club will be able to work in teams and/or solo, while getting the opportunity to collaborate with other people in the club and outside the community. Students get the chance to network and receive assistance or feedback on their projects.

DELTA LAMBDA DELTA is focused on programming language (PL) research in computer science. Our purpose is to strengthen PL research at AU, by promoting such research among the student body, discussing ideas, and broadening perspectives on modern PL research. If you are already interested in the theoretical aspects of computer science, or want to find out what kind of research there is to be done in computer science in general, this is the right place for you! We are here to help aspiring researchers become established in the PL research community and help each other with publishing and learning about PL. Even if you're not sure whether you want to become a researcher in the field, and just want to learn more, we will be happy to have you.

Cybersecurity and Computing Professionals

This organization, is a hub for passionate individuals in Cybersecurity and Computer Science. This hybrid club model merges in-person, and virtual interactions, through Discord and Zoom, fostering collaboration, networking, and shared learning. We offer a diverse event lineup, including general networking, computer science gatherings, and cybersecurity sessions. From hackathons to tech talks, the goal is to find and link members to events that also provide valuable insights and connections. Look forward to seminars led by professionals in the field, offering real-world perspectives. They are committed to helping you define your career path, finding certifications for you and guiding you toward success.

Academic Success Center

Are you struggling in a specific class? The Academic Success Center (ASC) is home to a variety of free support services including tutoring, academic coaching, success workshops for 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ students. If you have any additional questions about the ASC, please email Dr. Lorraine Evans.


Career Services

The School of Computer and Cyber Sciences works very closely with our Career Services department to ensure you're ready for the work force upon graduation from 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ University. School of Computer and Cyber Sciences students have a designated Career Services consultant who is available to assist students with career assessments/planning as well as offering graduate and professional school guidance. Our Career Services department hosts events throughout the semester for students to prepare them for success after graduating from 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ. Career Services will host a variety of events each semester. Students can register for these events by contacting Career Services or visiting the events section of your Handshake profile.

Coming this Semester with Career Services: Annual career fair for ALL students and alumni featuring area and regional employers and graduate programs recruiting students and graduates for current and future opportunities which include:

Georgia Cyber Center

Hull McKnight Building - Cyber Center

The , 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ's Riverfront Campus, officially opened on July 10, 2018. Phase One of the facility, the Hull McKnight Building, is the headquarters of the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences. All School of Computer and Cyber Sciences upper-division courses are held at the Hull McKnight Building. as a student attending class at the Georgia Cyber Center.

Professional Development

In partnership with 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ's Career Services, you will participate in various career preparation activities.

Personal Development

Learn the importance of critical thinking and communications skills to develop into a well-rounded career professional.

Academic Achievement

Develop effective study habits and receive an enhanced learning experience within and outside of the classroom.

Community Engagement

Participate in community services hosted by the Cyber Institute, AU and other community groups.

Exclusive Activities

JAGByte LLC members will be able to participate in activities that are exclusive to the community, including:

  • Cohort-based courses related to their major
  • One-on-one academic and career coaching
  • Site visits to tech companies and organizations

Requirements:

  • Must be an incoming 51³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÆØÁÏ freshman, majoring in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Cyber Operations or Cybersecurity Engineering
  • Must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0

Senior Design Project

Senior Design (SD) represents a culminating academic experience wherein students engage in a capstone course project prior to graduation. Specifically, participants address real-world technical challenges presented by project sponsors, with projects potentially spanning multiple academic semesters. These projects encompass a diverse range of disciplines, including but not limited to full-stack development, cybersecurity, and virtual reality.

Previous Senior Design projects have demonstrated a broad spectrum of technical applications, including:

  • Deep learning for image classification.
  • Development of full-stack web services.
  • Implementation of virtual reality applications for public health initiatives.
  • Vulnerability analysis of virtual machine environments.
  • Compiler program analysis.
  • Design and development of voice-based study applications.
  • Application of augmented reality for handwritten character recognition.
  • Development of dynamic resource generation systems for cyber defense.

Senior Design provides students with the opportunity to apply acquired theoretical knowledge to practical, real-world scenarios, fostering the development of essential professional skills.
